Why are no heads rolling?
Heads? Heck … there are hardly any eyeballs rolling, as this sort of crap from the UN is now common as designer muck in baby blue berets and pretty much expected as business as usual.
U.N. officers in Sudan have squandered millions by renting warehouses that were never used, booking blocks of hotel rooms that were never filled, and losing thousands of food rations to theft and spoilage, according to several internal audits by the U.N. Office for International Oversight Services. One U.N. purchasing agent has been accused of steering a $589,000 contract for airport runway lights to a company that helped his wife obtain a student visa, while two senior procurement officials from the United States and New Zealand have been charged by a U.N. panel with misconduct for not complying with rules designed to prevent corruption.
Hello?
I’m too mad to even write about this tonight.
Read the story, let me know what you think. Perhaps we’ll rip them a new one in the morning.
It is scary to me that as someone who generally is able to think of herself as well informed, my awareness of the U.N. and UNICEF apparently flash-froze when the only controversy was that if one tried collecting for UNICEF *and* getting candy at Halloween, some grumpy-ass folks would regard one as a double-dipper.
Since then it has been easy to dismiss what few rumblings I did hear as being the thunder of American isolationists, rather than the informed judgments of people paying far better attention. Thanks for the education, even though it is a painful one.
Unfortunately, no one will be ripped about this. I’m sure they’ll pick a couple of people to made an example of and that will be the end of it. I might make the press a few more times, and a few token reforms will be passed.
Government waste is part of the system.
Menchu,
The truly scary bit is understanding how effective the PR machine has been. Considering how much they spend on spin, it certainly should be, but the fact that it works so well is terrifying.
And IAA,
Of course, you’re right … if they even get around to picking a scapegoat or two, which is doubtful. As for token reforms, I don’t think they’ll bother.
